The forecast is calling for ninety-four and dry by noon. That's not desperate heat for Escalante in May, but it changes how the day works: short hike before the lot fills, lunch in town, a late afternoon drive when the canyon walls turn copper.
If you're hauling a normal SUV, Hole-in-the-Rock is chip-sealed to mile ten and fine to mile thirty-six when it's dry — a real workout past that. Burr Trail is dry top to bottom. Highway 12 is open the whole way to Capitol Reef — the question isn't whether you can drive, it's whether you can get back before dark.
